Arrival - Step-by-Step instructions
Getting to trains from planes: Zurich Airport has
a fairly big express train station in its basement which is served by a
variety of different trains. The airport train station (follow the
signs to SBB/CFF or simply "Bahn") is clearly signposted. Getting a ticket:
Once you get to the airport train station as a visitor, you should
purchase a ticket for the greater Zurich public transport system for
the remaining duration of your stay. - To get a 24hr day pass, a 72hr ZurichCard
or even a monthly pass you need to go to the teller window of the Swiss
railways. Don't panic - they do speak English in addition to German,
French and Italian and they do take credit cards with a signature or
pin number.
- If you'll be in Zurich for a few
weeks, consider buying a monthly pass. A pass covering the central city
and immediate surroundings will cost about 80 CHF (75 CHF for a
personal pass you can't lend to someone, but they'll have to photograph
you.) To buy one, ask the ticket seller for a "transferable monthly
pass for zone 10 and the surrounding zones."
- If you are in a rush, there are machines
that sell you a simple ride or simple day passes (no museums, no
regional coverage included). There are two types: normal coin operated
or screens with an English user interface. The one way ticket should be
5-6 CHF. If you use the automated machine you need coins of 1, 2 or 5
CHF, a twenty CHF bill or you can use your credit card. But in the
latter case the machine might be a pain and ask you for the PIN of your
credit card, which very few people know because they usually simply
sign for their purchases (!)
Getting to the Office: Once
you have a ticket, check the departure tables on the monitors that list
the departing trains, where they are going to and which platform/track
they are departing from (track 3 and 4 are most common). Most of the
westbound trains (service interval of approx. 10min, trains to Basel
are an exception) are headed for the Zurich HB (Hauptbahnhof or Main
Station). Pay attention to the suburban train line S2 (service every
30min) that further continues to Zurich Enge close to the Google
office. Google Switzerland GmbH
